Dopo lunghe trattative J-B. G. Deloye (1838-1899) nel 1897 si aggiudicò l’incarico per il monumento a Garibaldi (1807-1882) nella sua città natale. Del primo progetto presentato fu subito amata la figura dell’eroe per «la rassomiglianza e la bella attitudine» ma si scatenarono le polemiche contro il neonato che, posato in origine su un cippo, volgeva le spalle all’Italia. Deloye dovette modificare la sua posizione, senza però che il neonato volgesse le spalle alla Francia: la soluzione fu di collocare il bambino tra le sue due madri, la Francia e l’Italia. After long discussions in 1897 J-B. G. Deloye (1838-1899) was entrusted to realize the monument to Garibaldi (1807-1882) in his own native town. In the first Deloye’s project the figure of the hero was immediately beloved for his «resemblance and his beautiful attitude» but the child was hardly attached for the reason of his behavior with the shoulders in the direction of Italy. So the sculptor had to modify his position and he settled him between his two mothers: Italy and France. Thank to Manuela Cattaneo for the photos.
