Il ritratto di Lazare von Schwendi – valente capitano che nel XVI secolo sconfisse i turchi guadagnandosi così il podere e il castello di Hohlandsburg (1563) dove impiantò il vitigno del tocai importato dall’Ungheria – è invece una delle opere della maturità di Bartholdi. Collocato in cima a una fontana, Schwendi indossa abiti cinquecenteschi e tiene in mano proprio un racemo di tocai.
The Lazare von Schwendi’s portrait – he was a famous captain who fought the Turks in the 16th century and for that reason, in 1563, he received the castle of Hohlandsburg from the Emperor Maximilian II of Habsburg where he had introduced the Tokay wine-growing from Hungary – is one of the last work by Bartholdi. It’s settled on the top of a fountain, dressed as in the Renaissance age while he’s hanging a branch of tokay.
