Alto 13,5 metri, il monumento a Federico II (1712-1786) venne svelato il 31 maggio 1851 in occasione del centoundicesimo anniversario dell’incoronazione del re-compositore. Esso è senza dubbio l’opera più imponente dello scultore classicista C. D. Rauch (1777-1857) il cui bronzetto si conserva alla Alte Nationalgalerie: Federico il Grande è ritratto a cavallo in uniforme, col tricorno e “sostenuto” ai quattro lati dalla Fortezza, la Giustizia, la Prudenza e la Temperanza. Sul basamento inferiore invece compaiono a bassorilievo le figure che condivisero col monarca la storia e il destino della Prussia.
With a height of 13,5 meters the monument to Friedrich II (1712-1786) had been unveiled on the 31 May 1851 in the occasion of the 11th anniversary of the king and composer coronation. It’s without doubt the most overshadow work by the classical sculptor C.D. Rauch (1777-1857) , its bronzette has conserved at the Alte Nationalgalerie: Friedrich the Great has been portrayed in uniform, with the three-cornered hat, and “supported” by the Fortitude, the Justice, the Prudence and the Temperance. The lower basement has animated in bas-relief by figures that shared with the king the history and destiny of the Prussia.
